The concept of linguistic mediation might be comparatively new in the language classroom, hence teacher’s continued general sense of confusion (or panic) at its mention. However, in reality it has to an extent always been a part of the communicative classroom – we just didn’t recognise it as such. In this hands-on workshop we’ll start by exploring what exactly we mean by linguistic mediation and why it’s such an important skill to incorporate into the language classroom. We’ll then look at how we can start to recognize language learning tasks that incorporate mediation and latterly at tips and ideas on we can create mediation tasks using existing content in our coursebooks.

Alex is a DELTA trained teacher trainer with over 18 years’ experience of working in ELT as a teacher, teacher trainer and academic director. Prior to his experiences in ELT, Alex worked as a journalist before a chance encounter in the Indonesian jungle began him on the path which has led him to working with National Geographic Learning. Alex has presented and run workshops and webinars on a wide range of topics in over 35 countries throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia. He is currently the Senior ELT Academic Consultant for National Geographic Learning.
